On Saturday 28 December 2013 Robin, Mama, Papa and I did the Coast to Coast Walk. It goes from the City to Onehunga and is one of the only places in the world world where you can go from one ocean to another in a day. It usually takes 5 and a half hours but it took us 4 and a half hours. It is 16 km. There are 3 optional hills on the way. One is Auckland Domain, two is Mount Eden and three is One Tree Hill.
Robin and I went on our scooters and Mama and Papa walked. We each took water and snacks. I felt happy to do it.
I am a Year 6 student at Glenbrae School in Auckland, NZ. I am in Room 9 and my teacher is Mr Nath.

Christmas Day
On Christmas Day I woke up early and went to my Mum and Dad's room. Robin was already in there and we all opened our stockings. I got a magic set, a Darth Vader Lightsabre, two Hot Wheels, some cookies, and chocolates. From Robin I got a necklace. From Uncle Steve and Aunty Sue I got a Nerf Gun and a T-Shirt. We then went to Aunty Listy's house for breakfast and got presents there. I got a Nerf flying football, All Blacks Pillow Pet and heaps of other cool stuff. Following that, we went to Hamilton for a late lunch with Papa's family and opened some more gifts before we came home the next day. The best thing about Christmas was seeing family.

After School
After School on Friday Papa, Robin and I went down to Saint Heliers to look for Santa's. We found them all. We went around Saint Heliers and went down the same streets a couple of times. It was fun anyway. Then we got some food and I got some Sushi and a Milkshake. The Milkshake was strawberry flavored and refreshing. Then we came home.

My Reflection on Netbooks -2013
Hi, My name is Karl. I am in Room 9. My teacher is Mr. D. Nath.
This was an exciting year for me because I started using my chromebook for my learning. I was excited by the thought of doing cool stuff on it, but it took me awhile to start using it responsibly.
These are my reflections:
My teacher taught me how to use sumo paint, keyboard shortcuts and cybersafety. The thing I learn’t from myself was how to use google presentation and how to type so I finish my work quick and go on study ladder. The things I learnt was to be on the right sites.
Outside of school I learnt how to organise my google drive and change the colours of my folders. I helped other kids this year by telling them how to do things like getting on to the class site. I used my Key Competencies to think what to research about, wrote Positive E-mails and blog posts, Used language, symbols and texts to get my punctuation correct for my writing and managing what sites I am on so I don’t go on games or youtube. (The picture below is from a narrative I wrote).

Christchurch Orana Park
Orana Park
On Saturday 30 November Nana, Mama, Robin and I went to Orana Park, the Christchurch Zoo. First we saw the meerkats and the otters. Then we went to the farmyard area and patted cows and sheep, and also saw donkeys, Shetland ponies, llamas and alpacas as well as chickens and ducks. Next we saw the kea, where I learnt the young kea have yellow around their eyes and beaks. There were a lot of African animals including giraffes, rhinos, African wild dogs, cheetahs, lions, springbok and zebras. My favourite animals were the lions, cheetahs, and tigers. (The picture below is of Krissila's pride feeding.)

Living on a Shoestring by Nyree Tomkins.
Living on a Shoestring by Nyree Tomkins.
This story is about Mum getting a book called How to Live on a Shoestring from the library. After Mum got it Dad thumbed through it and said “We do most of these things already, but we do waste toothpaste. Do you realise how much toothpaste you waste by not using everything in the tube?” Then Mimi said “We do use everything in the tube” and Dad said “No.”
Then Dad said “And Julia you could save money by using vinegar on your hair instead of conditioner”. Julia said “Vinegar? I don’t think so”. So Dad said “Yes it’ll work, Conditioner just balances the pH in your hair. Shampoo is a soap, so it has a alkaline pH and you need something acidic, like vinegar, to balance it out.”

Cross Fit
Everyday of the second week of the Term Three School Holidays, Robin and I have been going to Cross-fit at Ellerslie. At Cross-fit we did Bear Crawl, Inch Worm, Lizard/Spider Man and Broad Jump as warm ups. We also did rowing machine and ring rows. On the rowing machine we need to pull the handle backwards and dodge the sharks on the screen. One of the easiest things is jumping on and over the 20 kg weights. When we jump on them I can do fifty in twenty seconds. Another thing we do is back flips on the rings. It is very, very, easy. After you do it you are fit.

Tahuna Torea
On Tuesday Robin, Mama and I went to Tahuna Torea for a walk. At Tahuna Torea we played Humans vs Zombies. When we got there we started walking towards the Spit. Robin and I rushed ahead but we did not know which way the spit was. When Mama got to us she told us which way the Spit was. When we got to the bridge we could not go to the Spit because it was high tide. We went to the Godwit Lookout via the Upper Bush Walk instead. It was hard work going to the Godwit Lookout because there were lots of steps and it was a long way. It was an amazing view and we saw Kauri, Cabbage Tree and the top layer of the forest canopy. On the bottom layer of the canopy there was the leaf litter and bugs/insects. It was fun.

Mountain Biking
On Sunday Robin, Papa and I got our Mountain Bikes. When we got there we got our bikes ready and we set off. We went a bit too far and went past the cattle grid to the Mountain Bike Track. When we got back to where the cattle grid was, we went over it. Next we went along it to are kid track. On the kid track we were going fast but it was hard. We all fell off our bikes once or twice. After that we got on to track that was ranked beginner. It was pretty easy and I was able to maneuver very well. Then we went to easy which was a bit harder. Next I went to intermediate but Robin and Papa did easy. Advanced was the hardest. On it Papa's bike fell off a boardwalk, and almost fell down in a stream. Robin's bike fell down three times. My bike fell down once. Then we finished.

Auckland Council Elections 2013
In Auckland there are Council Elections every three years, and these are on right now.
The Mayor: The Mayor is elected by the public. The Mayor right now is Len Brown. There are seventeen candidates standing for Mayor and you can only pick one. Once elected, the Mayor appoints the Deputy Mayor which is one of the Councillors.
Councillors: There are thirteen wards and there are twenty Councillors. These twenty Councillors work with the Mayor to make up the governing body. The Governing body are in charge of the Auckland rates and regional issues etc.
Local Board Members: In the twenty-one local boards there are between five to nine people on them. That equals about one-hundred-and-eighty-nine people in Local Boards altogether. The Local Boards represent the communities they are for.

Taekwon-do
On Tuesday Mama, Robin and I went to Taekwon-do. When we were inside I saw Levi F and Jayden. Then it started and Levi, Jayden, Robin and I were on the same class. We had fun and the first skill we practiced was snap kick. I am good at it. Next we did scissor kick. I need to improve on that one but I am better than Monday. It was a bit easier than Monday. The next one was the hardest one. We had to kick the pad with two feet at a time. Levi, Robin and I were in the same group in our class, but Jayden was not. Then Jayden and I paired up and Robin and Levi paired up. Jayden would swing the noodle to me and I had to jump over it. Next we lined up with our instructors and jumped over the noodle and kick the pad that our instructors were holding. We had to remember to lift our knees up to our chest. Last we played Helicopter.
Taekwon-do means:

Hair Cutting Ceremony
On Saturday Mama and I went to a Nuiean Hair Cutting Ceremony. Once we arrived at Glenbrae School we got out of the car and saw Taki, Siosaia and Vili. Next we all went and sat down inside the hall. I was playing on Siosaias Netbook with him and Taki. We played G-Switch, Star Wars the Old Republic and Good Game Empire. Then we went to a table that was reserved for people who had been invited from Glenbrae School. After that we kept playing on the Netbook. When the Ceremony started a man and the Master of Ceremony spoke. Once the Master of Ceremony had finished the formal introduction we were invited to have some scrumptious food. I had a Bread Roll, some Salad, Chop Suey and Pork. Once that was done the Master of Ceremony spoke some more before we were invited to have some Ice-Cream, Chocolate Cake, Jelly and Fruit Salad. I had Ice-Cream and Chocolate Cake.
Next Taki, Saia (Siosaia) and I went out to the park to play, we played tiggy and soccer. Then sadly Taki, Saia and Vili had to go.When I got back to the Ceremony, I got some lollies form the lollie scramble. Next I went to sit with Mama, for some performances that were Nuiean Dances. Finally we left to go home, I felt happy that I was invited to the Hair Cutting Ceremony.

Star Wars
On Friday 27 September 2013 after School I was playing Star Wars. I was being Anakin Skywalker and Robin was being Yoda. First I said to the Clones "Fire on the Sith and Battle Droids". Then most of the Clones were killed! The few remaining Clones retreated. Next Yoda came onto the planet and then the remaining Clones, Yoda and I destroyed the Battle Droids but the Sith escaped. It was not done with out casualties. Suddenly a bomb dropped on me and I fell to the ground unconscious. Then Order 66 came. The Clones turned on the Jedi.
When I woke up I was in a Sith medical base. After that Chancellor Palpatine told me to turn to the Dark Side or die. I did not want to die so I turned to the Dark Side. Later on Yoda (on Dagobah) was woken by me walking. We started fighting with our Lightsabers. A little while later Yoda got reinforcements and I called for reinforcements as well. The Storm Troopers (who were the Clones turned bad) came to reinforce me and Yaddle and a lot of Rebels. Yoda and his troops retreated and left. I ordered the Storm Troopers to fire at Yoda's, Yaddle's and the Rebel's ships. Yoda escaped unfortunately. The next day I was fighting Darth Sidioius and won. The Jedi won the War.

Point England Cooking Demonstration.
On Tuesday 6 August 2013 Siupeli, Alisi and I went to Point England School to do a cooking demonstration. Once we got there we went to the office to ask where to go. Then we went to the upper kitchen. Next we met Brett McGregor, New Zealand's 1st Master Chef. Then we put our aprons on and got ready to cook. After that the Point England students came. Then we listened to Brett telling us what to do. Then Brett showed us how to cut. Then we washed our hands and Siupeli cut the carrot. Next Brett cut the onion. After that Brett crushed up the garlic and cut it up. Then we put the chicken which had previously been sprinkled with Salt and Pepper into the pan and cooked it up. At last the Chicken was cooking, once it was finished we put the Carrot, Garlic, Onion, Oregano, Stock, Crushed and Sieved Tomatoes and Tomato Paste. Once that was finished we put more Organo on it and Salt and added the Chicken. While that was cooking we had a quiz. After the quiz the Chicken was finished we put it on to plates, cut it up and gave out the spoons. It was delicious and yummy .

Cupcakes
On Wednesday we watched Breakfast News on TV One. The news reporters had cupcakes with blue icing for William and Kate's son Prince George Alexander Louis. We decided to make some too! First we mixed the dry ingredients. Next we added the liquid and dampened it all. Then we put the cases in the muffin tin and poured the mixture in. After it cooled, we iced them with blue icing (it was a boy) and put a yellow pebble on top for the crown. They were YUMMY!

Walking To The Sky Tower
On the way to the Sky Tower we saw a boat-shed owner and he told us about his boat. He and his sister owned it. His bosses boat is Lady Margaret. It was interesting.
We've recently read a book about the Rainbow Warrior and we saw a mosaic about it near Marsden Wharf where it was bombed.
I felt proud, happy and excited all at once after our trip because I had done it. We weren't tired but we did fall asleep quite quickly.

Soccer
Soccer
For the last 6 weeks of Term 2 Room 9 have been learning Soccer. Our coach was Ben from Auckland Football Federation.
In Soccer we learnt how to:
Dribble, it means to kick the soccer ball but keep it near you. Pass, it means to use the inside of your foot and pass it to another player in your team. Stop, it means to use the bottom of your foot to stop the ball. Kick, it means to kick the ball down to the other goal. Throw, it means to throw the ball in after it goes out.
We had a tournament, games plus plenty of practise. We had fun doing Soccer. We did it either in the Hall and on the Court. We did Truck and Trailer, Flag Tag and Octopus.

Big Shift by Jaqui Brown
WALT write a Book Review
For the purpose of Book Review, we have named the narrator Weremu.
Weremu grew up on a Sheep Farm. He had a brother called Terei and a sister called Cherie. Weremu had a Kunikuni pet pig named Snorky. He loved the Farm and was sad when his Mum and Dad split up. Weremu really loved his Dad and wanted to stay on the Farm. He could not stay with his Dad on the Farm so he had to go to the Wellington City with his Mum. When Werumu was in Wellington he missed the Farm, his pet Kunikuni Snorky, feeding the Lambs, watching Dad play Rugby on Saturdays, and having a joke with his Dad after the Rugby game.
When Weremu was in the city, he felt like there was no room to breathe. He had made some friends that lived in the same lot of flats. The three kids all played musical instruments and sat together and chatted on laundry day. Weremu’s friends were Tomo and Meilai.
When Tomo, Meilai and Weremu were older, Tomo and Weremu were at college together and Meilai was in Auckland. At University, Tomo trained to be a Doctor and Weremu trained to be a Vet. He wanted to be a Vet when he was an adult so he could work in the City or Countryside. When he grew up, he became a Vet. Weremu looked after lots of animals.
