Swimming

Today Robin, Papa and I went to Swim-Arama for Robin and me to do water safety. We were with Zoe the swimming instructor. We were learning how to be safe all over the place in the water, the kick-board and the noodle to complete the challenge.

Poem

                                                             Matariki

I turn into a bird then I fly into the night sky,
I see the seven stars of Matariki in the clear bright night,
I land on Matariki and I said "Oh wow",
I hear the people in Aoatearoa at the Matariki Ball,
I smell the yum kai and I hear the music at the Matariki Ball.

Library

This afternoon Robin, Oma and I went to the Panmure Library for Wild about Star Wars. At the Auckland Libraries they are doing the theme Wild over the school holidays.

We were making lightsabers and playing with them. There was also pin the lightsaber on Yoda. To make the lightsaber we had to roll up cardboard and tape the paper from the instructions that had the printed hilt (handle). My one was red and Robin's was blue and red.

Evil Eye

Uncle Malcolm has recently been to Turkey and bought back an evil eye for both Robin and I.  I wanted to find out more about the evil eye.

The evil eye is an eye that you can get that scares away the evil spirits and curses from when people do the "evil eye" to you.   The evil eye is when someone is angry at you and they glare at you.  The above picture shows a talisman.

Heaps of cultures believe in the evil eye, especially the Middle East.  The evil eye is a curse that is believed to cause harm, illness and even death.

Nowadays, a lot of tourists buy evil eye talismans as a memento of their holidays, like the one that we were each given.

Netherlands vs Argentenia FIFA 2014

This morning while we ate breakfast Robin, Mama & I watched the FIFA 2014 match Argentina vs Netherlands, the second semi-final. With Papa being from the Netherlands, we were supporting Netherlands.

The game was very gut-wrenching with both teams playing defensively. At half-time the score was Netherlands 0 - Argentina 0. After half-time, Argentina did better getting more attempts at goal that all missed.

At full time the score was Netherlands 0 - Argentina 0 so they went in to stoppage time followed by extra time. Still Netherlands 0 - Argentina 0. Lastly, they went into penalty shootout time where each team gets 5 penalty kicks at goal, one kicker vs one goalkeeper for each kick.

We were on the edge of our seats during this phase. The final score was Netherlands 2 - Argentina 4. We felt depressed at the end of the game. Netherlands now will be playing Brazil in Brasilia.

FIFA 2014

On Wednesday morning NZ time we were watching Brazil vs Germany in the first semi final of FIFA 2014 Football World Cup. The score was Germany 7 - Brazil 1.

It was really exciting because no-one expected the turnout and also because Germany got the opening goal and then got 4 goals in six minutes. At halftime the score was 5-0 to Germany. After halftime Brazil were doing much better and got a goal on full-time and there was a bit of extra time even though earlier on in the game the Referee had said no extra time. Germany missed getting their eighth goal in extra time.

The previous biggest loss for Brazil was in 1920 when they lost 6-0 to Uruguay.

Brazil has won 5 of the nineteen FIFA Football World Cups, but will not play in the final at Rio and will instead play for third and fourth at the capital of Brazil, Brasilia. Six of the FIFA Football World Cups have been won by the home country, but not this year.

Project Huia

Project Huia by Des Hunt.

Project Huia is a good chapter book by Des Hunt. It is about Logan, Jim and Ana who try to bring the Huia back from extinction. The Huia was a New Zealand native bird that became extinct long ago. The people who try to stop them are the Carson family that try to get the Huia first and get lots of money.

I recomend this for people who like books about New Zealand. This is an exciting book for more advanced readers.

Movies

On Sunday afternoon we went to Sylvia Park to watch House of Magic. It is a movie about Thunder the Cat who is dumped on the street. Then Thunder goes to a magicians house and has lots of fun. At the start Jack the rabbit and Maggie the mouse hate him but in the end they like him.

Tree Planting at Omaru River

On Saturday Robin, Mama and I went to Omaru River for tree planting. When we got there we were helping the Wai Care staff measure the water and the quality of the stream. The quality showed it was a good stream but there is still room for improvement.

Then we started planting the trees. I planted 6 trees. Together, everyone planted 500 trees in about 40 minutes.

Once the trees were planted we got some hot soup and bread rolls and listened to a member of the band Herbs who was playing some of their songs.

We also looked at bugs from the river. We saw two really cool Damselflies (see below for image) and lots of midges.
